Mid way through my career I changed gear and moved to working in Health and Social care. This was a great move as I realised I could be my authentic self and loved working with people of all ages in various settings. During this time I had my own therapy which was both cathartic and transformational and from this I felt strongly that I myself would love to work with people through their own traumas and blocks. I chose to train in person-centred therapy as it was the closest fit to my core beliefs and experience.
Working ethically and safely is really important to me. I am a registered member of the BACP. You'll find me on the BACP website www.bacp.co.uk under my full name - Penelope Wells number 400613. I fully subscribe to the BACP's Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions. I am a reflective practitioner which means that I regularly reflect on the work I do, whether that's by thinking whilst out on a dog walk, reflecting in supervision, or by reading and regularly engaging in training and events. I am also fully insured.
In my role working with BLG Mind, I opted to be an Inclusion Champion which was a hugely significant experience for me. What I learned from this is deeply embedded in the way I think, feel and practice.
I work both online and in person from comfortable premises in the historic area of Tunbridge Wells.
1 Little Mount Sion, Tunbridge Wells, TN1 1YS. I also offer hybrid if that works better for you.
My rates are £75 per 60 minute session and I issue a link to your phone or email to make payment. If you are based outside of the UK, I can provide my IBAN/Swift details.
I work with people aged 16 plus.
Predominantly I work with people struggling with the impact of trauma, however this may look and however the trauma is caused, whether this from abuse, neglect, incidents, bereavement and loss. I feel that resolving trauma is the gateway to expansion and creativity.
My relevant qualifications are as follows,
This is up to you. You can either come for a regular time in the week which I hold open until you decide you would like sessions to end.
Alternatively you can contact me on an ad-hoc basis, although I can't guarantee availability.
I work pluralistically which means I collaborate to work to your preferences to co-create the type of therapy that works for you. How do we achieve this? Initially, I find out if you have a sense of what your goals are - whilst also respecting if you are not sure yet what these are. Then I explore what you'd like from me - for example how much of lead you'd like me to take, whether or not you'd like me to encourage you to go to those deeper places or if you'd prefer to stay in a more 'thinking' places, whether you'd like to make use of some of the resources (like the sand, movement, brainspotting, and resources), and if you'd value me sharing knowledge and information. Of course, we continue to review this as the work continues and adapt. I also work intuitively too - so getting a feel for where you need me to be moment by moment.
The philosophy of a pluralistic approach recognises there is no single modality of therapy that is better than another, so I respect other approaches and recognise that when you explore your preferences for therapy, I may not be the best fit for you. Perhaps the best way to explain this is if you had a strong preference for me to work in a very confrontational way towards you, I wouldn't be true to my authentic self and beliefs so could signpost you towards therapists who might be more suitable.
Feel free to have a browse through the rest of my website or contact me for more information or for a complimentary introductory session to get a sense of how I might be able to help.
To work safely and ethically, I will gather some information about your medical health for two reasons. Firstly, it's helpful to know so that if anything happens in the sessions I have some background. Secondly it's for me to check in with whether I have the right experience to work with you and where I feel this is not the case, will support you to find alternatives if you'd find that helpful. I gather the information either in the introductory session or first session or by you completing my short client information form. I also provide an agreement for us to work together, setting out details such as how I ethically manage the information I have gathered.
If you'd welcome a complimentary session, or would like some further information please do reach out through the contact tab. I look forward to hearing from you.
